Xi Men Jie | Affordable Taiwanese Food in Town

Looking for some affordable places for Taiwanese food in Singapore? With 9 outlets scattered across the island, Xi Men Jie has become one of the cheap dining spots in town, known for serving up cheap and tasty eats around town. Whether you're craving classics like braised pork rice or something with a modern twist, like their cheese egg pancakes, Xi Men Jie has something for everyone, offering affordable Taiwanese dining in Singapore without breaking the bank.

We decided to check out the Funan Mall outlet, nestled in a cozy corner of Basement 2. Even though we arrived at the supposed peak dinner hour, at around 7 pm, we were pleasantly surprised by how quickly we were seated. The wait was just 15 minutes, which felt super reasonable for such a popular spot offering affordable food in town.

Must-Try Dishes
We kicked off the meal with two of their signature dishes -- the Braised Pork Rice in a large portion ($7.50+) and the Cheese Onion Egg Pancake topped with pork floss ($7.50+). Both dishes arrived in no time and were served steaming hot, which definitely set a good tone for the meal.

The braised pork rice was generously topped with tender and savoury braised pork, accompanied by preserved vegetables, and a perfectly braised egg. While I usually prefer a balanced mix of lean and fatty pork for that melt-in-your-mouth texture, Xi Men Jie leans toward a leaner cut of pork. That said, the meat was well-cooked and thankfully not too dry, maintaining a satisfying bite. The meat held up well in terms of flavour and texture, making it a solid choice for people who love affordable Taiwanese food in Singapore.

Next up, we indulged in the Cheese Onion Egg Pancake. The dish came with a crispy exterior. We could spot bits of scallions in the pancake, but the scallion flavour was a bit too subtle for my liking. The addition of cheese, however, was a game changer -- melted and gooey, giving a rich addition to the pancake. Topping it off with pork floss, the sweet-salty combination worked wonders, making this dish a must-try for those looking for affordable Taiwanese street food in Singapore.

Free Drink Promotion
A tip if you are visiting: Xi Men Jie offers a promotion where you can score a free drink simply by leaving a Google review. You can choose between Iced Honey Lemon Tea (U.P. $2.90+) or Iced Calamansi with Plum (U.P. $2.90+). We went with the iced honey lemon tea, which was refreshing with just the right amount of honey fragrance. It was not too sweet, and not too sour. Definitely a nice perk to complete a meal at one of the most affordable restaurants in town.
